About the IU-CWA Unit

The IU Unit of CWA, Local 4818, represents over 1,100 non-exempt PAA staff at IU. CWA has been representing workers on the Bloomington and Northwest campuses since 1993. The union discusses staff policy and wage distributions with IU HR every three years on behalf of all represented staff. The union also maintains regular communication with HR through quarterly Mutual Gains Meetings. Members can serve as stewards to help represented staff navigate grievance procedures to resolve departmental or individual issues with HR.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much are membership dues?

Union membership dues are 2 hours of pay each month. After submitting your authorization form, dues will automatically be deducted from your monthly paycheck and paid to the local.

What are the benefits of membership?

Our union enables PAA employees to work with IU to improve wages, benefits, safety, and working conditions as a group rather than fighting for each of those benefits as individuals. As a union, we discuss pay and policy with IU HR once every three years and meet with campus HR quarterly to communicate policy changes and maintain a good working relationship between the union and the university. Our union also trains stewards to help represented staff through the grievance process in cases of workplace issues, misconduct, or disputes.

Why should I become a member?

Unions are a worker-run organization. All action is entirely initiated by workers who volunteer their time to communicate with the university, steward grievances cases, and help inform fellow workers of their rights and protections. Like any volunteer organization, the benefits of this union are dependent on the effort that we as workers put into it. Participation from you creates a better union for all of us.
